Panama Snapshots: Spectacled Owls at Canopy Lodge

A world-class bird watching resort set in nature

Spectacled owls are common residents of Central American rainforests, but these nocturnal hunters are more often heard than seen. Their distinctive calls echo through the nighttime forests, then they retire at sunrise to spend the day roosting quietly in the shelter of the forest canopy.

The photographer was lucky to find these two young owlets out and awake during daylight hours. This scene took place on a mountain hillside near Panama’s Canopy Lodge. The lodge is a unique live-in observatory, set in Anton Valley atop of Semaphore Hill. Guests can bird watch right from rooms that open into the forest mid canopy, while the upper observation deck provides 360-degree views of the valley, the Rio Guayabo and beyond.
