Dominica is the lushest and most verdant island in the Caribbean. The changes over time have been minimal, so much so that some say Columbus might still recognize the island he described as “paradise on earth”. The nature island remains green and unscathed although new resorts are on the rise but at a slow pace, all asserting to be eco-friendly and environmentally savvy. Once an economy based on agriculture, a veer toward tourism was planned to supplement the nation’s income, all with a focus on sustainability and environmental conservation.
The island boasts more rivers than beaches, 365 in all, yet most are not navigable but lead to waterfalls, pools, hot springs and lakes. Nature lovers arrive to cool off in Emerald Pool and Trafalgar Falls. Hikers come to conquer the trail to Boling Lake and the latest island crossing of the Waitukubuli National Trail. This 115-mile trail might be a two-week endeavor, however, there are 14 accessible segments for day trips. While most activities are land-based in the interior with beaches sparse and rocky the underwater world is not to be forsaken. World-class dive sites feature walls, volcanic ridges, and pinnacles while snorkeling in shallow reefs offers day and night experiences that are exceptional when corals bloom during a full moon.
