Overview

Two nations, two cultures, and two totally different vibes.  On the Dutch side, St. Maarten is exceedingly developed and modernized with the hustle and bustle of traffic in Philipsburg. Here you’ll find a handful of casinos at mega-resorts, more nightlife than most Caribbean islands, and a vast selection of duty-free shops. Front Street is where most of the luxury and designer shopping exchanges take place.  Just steps from the commerce lies the boardwalk that runs along Great Bay, a strip filled with bars and restaurants offering a respite from the hubbub.

The northern French half feels bucolic as you cross the grassy pasture border in the center of the island. Over on the coast, the capital Marigot resembles a seaside hamlet in France or Italy but with distinct Caribbean influences.  Here stylish boutiques offer baskets of flowers alongside haute couture and local handicrafts.  Fisherman land their catch early mornings to display at the market along with spice, fruit and vegetable vendors. Chic residents dine on lobster while local musicians play Caribbean music in the background accentuating the charming blend of cultures.
