This is the heartland of the Mayan civilization with the greatest number and the most impressive Mayan ruins in Central America. The jungles of El Peten wedged between Belize and Mexico were once the center of the Mayan civilization. Ancient ruins are hidden within the lush forest, many unexcavated and others carefully restored. Among them, Tikal is the grandest Mayan city anywhere and features pyramids that rise above the jungle canopy. The surrounding forest is home to toucans, parrots and howler monkeys, filing the air with sounds and sights of nature.
