Hawaii Snapshots: Kilauea Point

This scenic overlook is a must-do stop on a driving tour of Kauai

The northernmost point of the main Hawaiian Islands, Kilauea Point offers panoramic ocean views, crashing surf and soaring sea birds. This narrow lava peninsula was inaccessible by land when work began on its iconic lighthouse in 1912. Building materials had to be hoisted up the cliffs by rope from small boats in the cove below.

Today, getting to the site, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places, requires nothing more than a quick detour off Highway 56, and an easy stroll from the parking area. The point is a favorite with birdwatchers, as the cliffs are home to resident sea birds including boobies, frigates, shearwaters and albatross, as well as migratory flocks and the rare Hawaiian nene goose.
