Fiji

Fiji’s Best Private Island Snorkeling Resorts

The Mamanuca Islands are home to some of Fiji’s favorite resorts. Lying just to the west of the main island of Viti Levu, they are just a boat ride or a quick 15-minute flight away from the International Airport. Many of the 20 small islands in this group are ringed in coral reefs that can be viewed with a short swim from shore, making them especially attractive for snorkelers. For avid fish watchers, the resorts with the most to offer are set on the smaller, private islands with no other hotels or day-trip excursions to crowd the reefs. Here are four of the top-rated resorts for a memorable Fiji snorkeling vacation.

Vomo Island Resort

At 225 acres, Vomo is one of Fiji’s larger private islands. And it is a case of bigger is better when it comes to beaches and coral reefs. Guests at Vomo Island Resort have two and a half miles of white sand beach to wander and more than five miles of coral reef to explore. With no other resort on the island and just 28 villas tucked into the lushly landscaped grounds, crowds aren’t a thing. Avid snorkelers could spend their entire vacation discovering new areas of the surrounding coral reefs, both from shore and on the regularly scheduled snorkel boat excursions. And when it’s time to surface, there’s plenty more to do.

Rocks Bar Vomo Resort

Vomo is an all-inclusive, five-star property that offers elevated dining experiences, spa services, and a wide range of activities and amenities. In the water sports department, there are expected offerings such as kayaks, windsurfers, and Hobie Cat sailboats, plus a unique Fliteboard experience where guests can learn the sport of gliding above the waves on a powered hydrofoil. Ashore, there are lighted tennis courts, a full- featured fitness center, basketball courts, yoga decks, and a nine-hole golf course. The island is laced with walking trails, including one that leads to the island’s central peak for 360-degree views. The resort’s culinary team has earned a reputation for creating some of the top-reviewed cuisines in Fiji, and they can also accommodate a wide range of special dietary requests. Accommodation options include beachside and hillside villas, along with 3-, 4- and 5-bedroom private residences that are well-suited for families and groups. https://vomofiji.com/

Matamanoa Island

Avid snorkelers have plenty of options at Matamanoa Island. Set on its namesake private island, this mid- sized resort is ringed by reefs that are easily accessible right from the beach. These reefs lie within a private marine sanctuary and boast some of the region’s best displays of hard corals. A favorite area for shore-based snorkeling begins in front of the resort’s beachfront villas, which are set on the island’s northeast shore, a bit apart from the other resort amenities. Guests can explore the waters of the Matamanoa Marine Sanctuary on their own, engage a snorkeling guide, or hop aboard one of the resort’s boats for a guided snorkel safari to more distant sites. For deeper explorations of the reefs, the resort also includes a full- service PADI dive center.

Matamanoa guest accommodations include ten beachfront villas, 24 beachfront bures, and 13 garden resort rooms. All villas and bures feature an outdoor shower, thatched gazebo, and plunge pool. Accommodations are spread across the southern half of this 27-acre island, keeping everything within walking distance of the restaurant, pool, watersports center, spa, and other resort amenities. Guests are provided with the full range of expected activities, from kayaking, sailing, and scuba diving to coconut husking, basket weaving, Fijian cooking lessons, and traditional song and dance performances. The staff can also arrange trips to adjacent islands, including nearby Monuriki island, which was made famous by Tom Hanks in the film Cast Away. https://matamanoa.com/

Navini Island Resort

Navini Island Resort sits in the center of one of Fiji’s original marine preserves, and the benefits of three- plus decades of protection are obvious to anyone who peeks below the water’s surface. The pristine corals that ring this private 6-acre island teem with all manner of tropical fish. The one thing not found here is an abundance of snorkelers. The reserve is not open to day-trip excursions from other islands, which means access is limited to just the guests staying in the resort’s ten private cottages. The reserve can be explored right from the beach, and there’s a lot more to discover with daily boat trips that take snorkelers farther afield to sites offering an even greater diversity of underwater landscapes, such as large plate coral formations and colorful soft coral gardens.

Navini Diving and Snorkel

It’s not just the snorkeling experience that sets Navini apart. With a maximum of 20 guests served by a staff of 24, the focus in this secluded setting is on personal attention and personal choices. Arrivals are greeted at Fiji’s international airport and whisked to the resort by private car and speedboat. Once on the island, guests create their daily itineraries from a menu of complimentary water sports, guided activities, tours, and cultural experiences. While the resort is a favorite with couples and honeymooners, it is also a family- friendly destination, with available babysitting and children’s programs and accommodation choices that include a two-room villa and a family villa. All accommodation packages include meals, activities, and transfers to the island. https://www.navinifiji.com.fj/

Nakelo Treasure Island Resort Fiji

Treasure Island is one of Fiji’s original private island resorts, and 50 years later, it’s still a favorite. This four- star property has kept pace with the times through periodic upgrades and renovations, and today, it remains a favorite for family vacations. Like other private island resorts in the Mamanucas, Treasure Island has created a designated marine preserve in the surrounding waters. The resort also sponsors a hawksbill turtle conservation program and hatchery that welcomes visitors. The reefs offer excellent snorkeling with the added bonus of dedicated snorkeling coaches and guides for both shore-based and boat-based snorkeling trips. This service is especially helpful for families with young snorkelers. Another unique snorkeling experience offered at Treasure Island is guided night snorkeling excursions that reveal octopus and other nocturnal marine life.

Nakelo Resort

Like most Fijian resorts, Treasure Island offers packages for couples’ getaways and wedding parties, but its strongest offerings are for family-friendly holidays. Nanny services are available for younger children, and the Little Treasures Club provides daily supervised activities for children aged 4 to 11, offering unique hands-on experiences of Fijian culture. The resort’s Eluvuka Restaurant provides special early children’s dinner hours with menus tailored to younger palates. Parents are not forgotten, as the kitchen also serves a range of innovative menus and offers memorable dining experiences such as a private sandbar island picnic, dinner under the stars, or private table service at the water’s edge. Families can engage in programs that teach traditional Fijian handicrafts, cooking, Fijian phrases, traditional herbal lore, and kava ceremony preparations. A weekly highlight for the entire family is the traditional Fijian lovo feast and dance ceremony. https://nakelotreasure.com/

French Polynesia

The Top 7 of the World’s Most Romantic Island Resorts

An escape to a tropical island with your significant other is the essence of a romantic interlude. Island- based resorts around the world cater to couples, but there are a select few that stand out from the crowd. Here are seven top choices where the two of you can find the perfect blend of romance, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

Namale, Fiji

Start your day with a couple’s massage; grab a gourmet picnic basket and follow a nature trail to a seaside lunch spot; spend the afternoon snorkeling one of the world’s most colorful coral reefs; enjoy a sunset soak in a heart- shaped hot tub set on a secluded shore; then cap the evening off with a candlelight dinner under the stars. This is a typical day at Fiji’s Namale Resort, and it’s why this boutique adults-only property is a favorite for romantic getaways.

Fiji

With just 22 five-star villas set within a private 525-acre nature preserve on the less-developed island of Vanua Levu, Namale provides guests with a private and personalized vacation experience. The resort is described as an inclusive vacation experience, but at a higher level than the buffet and beach party scene typical of many all-inclusive properties. Instead, guests create bespoke schedules from a menu of options that range from snorkeling, diving and traditional fishing excursions to waterfall hikes, village visits and immersive cultural experiences such as a kava ceremony. A particular favorite with couples is a private dinner served in a candlelit sea cave on the beach. For info: https://www.namalefiji.com/

Cayo Espanto, Belize

The phrase “award-winning” is overused to the point of being trite. But that’s not the case with Cayo Espanto. Year after year, this private island resort garners impressive accolades from some of the top authorities in the travel, hospitality, and culinary fields. Located three miles off the coast of San Pedro, Belize, Cayo Espanto is a five-star property comprised of six one and two-bedroom oceanfront villas and a single over-water bungalow. Each residence is strategically positioned to provide privacy and unrestricted ocean views, with signature features such as private docks, plunge pools, and generous floor plans that meld indoor and outdoor spaces.

The resort’s chefs are often lauded for their excellence, and Cayo Espanto was named as Belize’s best hotel restaurant in the World Culinary Awards. Bespoke menus are individually crafted for each guest based on their established tastes and preferences. Upon request, the chefs can also assist in creating food and beverage pairings that further enhance the dining experience. Couples wanting more private time can enjoy a gourmet breakfast in bed or a candlelit dinner on the verandah, in keeping with the resort’s ethos of total personal attention.

Guided water sports include private snorkeling trips, scuba diving charters, kayaking, sailing, bone fishing, and deep-sea fishing. Guests can join birdwatching trips to a pair of nearby sanctuary islands or venture farther afield for day trips to ancient Mayan cities and nature preserves. As would be expected from a world-class resort, the on-site spa offers a full suite of services, including couple’s massages. For reservations: https://aprivateisland.com/

Labriz Resort & Spa, Seychelles

Mahe is the gateway to the Seychelles and the most popular island, with more than 100 resorts lining the island’s magnificent beaches. Travelers seeking a more private location can board an inter-island ferry for the 50-minute ride from Mahe to nearby Silhouette Island and the Hilton Labriz Resort & Spa. Silhouette is the third largest of the Seychelles islands, but there are no crowds because more than 90 percent of the island is a national park, and the Labriz is the only hotel on the island.

Seychelles

The hotel sits on a white sand beach at the base of Mont Dauban, a 2,400-foot-high volcanic peak that offers miles of hiking trails on slopes clade in virgin rainforest. The shores of Silhouette Island are surrounded by a marine preserve that offers renowned diving and snorkeling sites. Unspoiled nature is a big draw, but the Labriz resort is a far cry from an eco- camp. The property includes a full-service spa, fitness center, pool, tennis courts, and a PADI five-star diving center. Guests can choose between five on-site restaurants serving fresh seafood and various international, Mediterranean, Creole, Asian, Indian, and Arabic cuisines. For more: https://shorturl.at/gmrX5

Celestia Grand, Greece

The island of Santorini is an Instagram darling, generating an endless supply of evocative images featuring white-and-blue Cycladic villas stacked on oceanfront cliffs or amber-tinged sunset tableaus. The popularity of this most famous Greek island might become a turnoff for some, but even at the peak of high season, when the streets and cafes of Fira Town are at their busiest, it’s possible to find privacy and quiet. You just have to know where to look.

Some find personal space by spreading out to less- visited parts of the island. But bespoke luxury and privacy can also be found right on the edge of town. Celestia Grand is a collection of seven private villas set atop a west-facing oceanfront bluff overlooking the harbor. Though small in size, this exclusive property delivers a full range of five-star indulgences. On arrival, guests meet with a personal concierge to craft a bespoke resort experience. Villas decorated in original artwork feature grotto-style bathrooms, spacious social areas, and private ocean-view terraces with plunge pools.

For guests seeking more than cloistered bliss, the concierge staff can also arrange private yacht cruises, escorted shopping excursions, and helicopter tours. Visit: https://www.celestiagrand.com/

The Muraka, Maldives

The Maldives is known for pristine coral reefs and upscale resorts set on stunningly beautiful private islands. Over-water bungalows are de rigueur at many properties, and resorts are constantly upping the ante with ever larger and more luxurious versions of their waterborne retreats. For the ultimate in immersive aquatic experiences, couples can set their sights on Conrad Maldives Rangali Island Resort, which is home to a one-of-a-kind villa known as The Muraka.

The portion of this expansive over-water villa that is visible from the surface includes two private bedrooms, bathrooms with ocean-facing tubs, and an extensive private deck and plunge pool — all with private 24-hour butler service on call. The Muraka’s real wow factor is the master suite, which lies some 16 feet below the surface. The sleeping area and adjacent viewing room sit beneath a transparent acrylic dome that provides 180-degree views of the reef and passing fish life. The bathroom is equally as stunning, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows beneath the waves.

The Muraka isn’t the only immersive experience that awaits at Rangali Island. All resort guests can dine beneath the waves at the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, sample premium vintages in the submerged wine cellar, and enjoy award-winning cuisines at 12 additional restaurants set around the resort’s landscaped grounds and beaches. Jade Mountain, St. Lucia

There are rooms with a view… and then there’s St. Lucia’s Jade Mountain. Travel writers could wear out a thesaurus trying to capture the experience of sleeping in one of the luxurious cliffside rooms where the missing fourth wall opens to expansive vistas of blue Caribbean waters, amber sands, and the emerald slopes of the island’s most famous landmarks. The design blurs the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces and incorporates memorable touches, such as infinity plunge pools seemingly floating in space.

Jade Mountain

Captivating views of the Piton peaks, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site, are not the only reason why Jade Mountain is considered one of the most romantic and memorable resorts in the world. This sister property to the acclaimed Anse Chastanet resort shares a 600-acre oceanfront nature preserve that takes in two of St. Lucia’s finest beaches and lush valleys and hillsides crisscrossed with hiking and bike trails. Guests have exclusive access to the Jade Mountain Club where they can sample the culinary creations of James Beard Award-winning chef Allen Susser, along with several additional dining options at Anse Chastanet. Additional indulgences include spa treatments at on-site Kai en Ciel and a visit to the Chocolate Lab to savor locally made treats. For more: https://jademountain.com/

The Brando, Tahiti

The Brando is a dream five decades in the making. Actor Marlon Brando came across the pristine Tahitian atoll of Tetiaroa while filming the 1960s classic Mutiny on the Bounty. It became his lifelong dream to create a low-impact luxury resort in this special location, but it was a dream that came to fruition after his passing. In 2014, The Brando opened as one of the world’s most sustainable 5-star luxury properties, dedicated to sustainability and zero carbon footprint hospitality. It became the first resort in the world to achieve LEED Platinum Certification.

Villas showcase a warm, organic style that incorporates both sustainable natural materials and modern energy-saving technologies. While traditional in appearance, they provide a full range of modern comforts, and blend indoor and outdoor spaces to create an atmosphere of seamless relaxation. Each villa is provided with a private butler service and there are two gourmet restaurants on site. Couples can create shared memories with special spa packages and private sunset lagoon cruises. Camp Cecil

The World’s Most Luxurious Glamping Resorts

Sleeping in a tent isn’t everyone’s idea of a great vacation. But at these resorts, we’re not talking blow-up mattresses and sleeping bags. This is glamping, the fast-growing trend of “glamorous camping.” It’s an activity that welcomes guests with luxuriously appointed tents that offer all the consorts of a fine hotel room in a more natural setting. Glamping resorts are often set on spectacular beaches or in lush gardens, and they are popping up worldwide. Here are seven of our favorite tropical glamping locations.

Baja, Mexico

A trip to this award-winning camp begins with a boat ride. Camp Cecil de la Isla is a carbon-neutral and eco-friendly operation on a pristine beach on Espiritu Santo Island in the Sea of Cortez. On the hour-long voyage from the port city of La Paz, guides look for the whale sharks that frequent this area. Once on the island, guests are housed in private tents with added touches such as Egyptian cotton linens, soft lantern lighting, and housekeeping services. The camp centers around a large dining tent where the camp chefs serve a surprisingly upscale menu, considering the location. And the location is why Camp Cecil remains the darling of travel publications. The island is a world-class destination for sea kayaking and is renowned for marine life encounters like snorkeling with sea lion pups and turtles. Visit: https://tosea.net/

Tabanan, Bali, Indonesia

Bali is a backpacker’s mecca, so it’s unsurprising that plenty of camping-themed resorts exist. But if you want the biggest and best glamping experience, you’ll want to head to the island’s west- central coast and reserve your oceanfront tent at Bali Beach Glamping. This 50-tent compound has all the expected trappings of a high-end stay, including private en-suite bathrooms, room service, and available air conditioning. And if you want to avoid cloistering yourself in canvas, the tent sides can be raised to provide stunning ocean views and emerald-hued rice fields. You get all the expected amenities of an upscale property, including an oceanfront infinity pool, spa, and a beachside dining tent. Nightly bonfires, beach barbeque, and unique floating breakfast experiences add to the fun, and the concierge can set you up with every manner of water and land sport. Viti Levu Island, Fiji

The “Pathway to the Stars” camping experience at Fiji’s Nanuku Resort is a truly one-of-a-kind glamping experience. You’ll be the only one enjoying this exclusive private island camping trip. Nanuku is an all-villa boutique property on the southern shore of Viti Levu island. For years, guests have enjoyed day trips to this offshore private island. Recently, the resort introduced a bespoke overnight camping experience that begins with a private boat ride to a deserted beach. After a day of swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and exploring the uninhabited island, campers are treated to a beachside seafood barbeque, private dance show, and star gazing session. After securing the camp, the staff retires for the night, leaving guests the choice of retiring to a private tent or sleeping under the stars in a hammock. The following day, the crew returns to serve a gourmet beachfront breakfast. Visit: https://nanukuresort.com/

Tulum, Riviera Maya, Mexico

Located halfway between Playa Del Carmen and the town of Tulum, Xpu Ha Bay has been called the Riviera Maya’s best-kept secret. This quiet bay is the site of Serenity Luxury Tented Camp. And luxury isn’t just a marketing slogan. It’s a tent made from natural materials and set on a platform. But instead of camp cots and lanterns, you’ll relax in a Colonial-style safari décor with leather couches, king-sized beds, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, organic bath amenities, and 24-hour personal concierge service. One tent even includes a private hot tub. The camp sits within an oceanfront nature preserve filled with lush greenery and tropical native trees. An emphasis on wellness includes daily yoga, Pilates, and meditation sessions, plus the relaxation of a full-service spa and a serene pool. Guests enjoy a private beach club and healthful upscale dining at the on-site Mystic Restaurant. For information: https://tulumglampingmexico.com/

Costa Rica

This is glamping at the next level – literally. The Nayara Tented Camp is a collection of African safari-style tents on raised hillside platforms designed to minimize the ecological footprint while maximizing views of the Arenal Volcano and the La Fortuna Valley. And by platform, we aren’t just talking about a simple wooden deck. These private patios sit under broad canvas awnings and feature glass-fronted plunge pools fed by natural hot springs, soak tubs, day beds, and an outdoor shower garden. Interiors feature upscale furnishings and four-poster king beds. The camp is affiliated with the adjacent Nayara Springs resort, a Relais & Chateaux luxury property. Camp guests enjoy the same five-star service and gourmet dining experiences and can engage in a wide range of activities, from yoga and spa visits to rainforest canopy tours, volcano hikes, and whitewater rafting. Expansive decks deliver sweeping ocean views, while interiors feature king-sized beds, indoor showers, and tubs. That said, the tents at this unique Four Seasons property are far from something you’d take camping. These wood and canvas showpieces sit on spacious two-tiered private decks and incorporate upscale features like open-air living rooms, king beds, plunge pools, fire pits, deep soaking tubs, and skylit showers. Tents can be opened wide to take in sea breezes, but air conditioning is also available. The Coolest Adult Pools at Caribbean Resorts

At the heart of nearly every tropical resort is the pool. It’s where we catch some rays, cool off, and chill out with a good book and a refreshing libation. However, it is hard to do when enthusiastic youngsters are running about, having the time of their lives. To combat the commotion, many resorts are adding adults- only pools. It’s simply a matter of separation, giving those with more mature tastes a body of water to call their own, a place to swim a few unencumbered laps, float peacefully, or recline poolside in a chaise lounge.

For all who yearn for this more civilized and sophisticated version of pool deck leisure, we offer six of our favorite resorts with adults-only pools.

Grace Bay Club, Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

Plan to immerse yourself in luxury with attentive and personalized 5-star service when you stay at this resort, one of the first luxury retreats to honor the shores of Grace Bay Beach. Set on 11 acres of oceanfront isolation, offering an escape from the outside world, the white sand beaches rimmed in azure waters provide the ideal visual escape. Adults find plenty of seclusion staying at the hotel (catering to only adults) or any villa options, as there is always that perfect place to hide out.

Turks Grace Bay

The ultra-modern glass-edge infinity pool at Grace Bay Club is just for adults. Photo: Grace Bay Club

The exclusive adult-only pool features a glass- ended infinity edge and impressive sea vistas. Guests can unwind on plush sun loungers that line the pool edge, where umbrellas are on location for respite from the sun’s rays. For added convenience, the pool is next to The Infiniti Bar, the longest bar in the Caribbean at 90 feet and the first infinity-edge bar in the world. Here, you can sip on handcrafted cocktails and sample creative tapas in a quiet atmosphere away from the main pool activity. For added privacy, settle into one of the plush, poolside cabanas immersed in exclusivity and order a Jalapeno Margarita.

The Cove Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas

They call it an ultra-pool, an aquatic feature that takes sunning, mingling, and relaxation to a higher level. Much like a private club, right down to the high-energy house music playing in the background, the area is an exclusive enclave for adult guests staying at The Cove Atlantis. A touch of the exotic transforms this hip water hole into a daytime place to mingle, with concierge service, an onsite cafe, and even an outdoor gaming pavilion near the water’s edge.

Bahamas Paradise Island

Ocean and beach views abound at Atlantis Resort’s pool at The Cove complex. Photo: Atlantis Resorts

Stunning views of Paradise Island beaches provide the backdrop, with activity centering around the 9,000-square-foot central pool, which is in turn flanked by a pair of raised infinity-edge water features. If zoning out is in order, plenty of daybeds are on deck—or you can wade out to the center of the pool to secure a coveted spot on one of the daybed islands surrounded by water—definitely the place to be seen. For an added degree of seclusion, guests can reserve one of the 20 private cabanas with teak-louvered walls scattered about the pool area, each offering a perfect combination of privacy and grand views of the beach and pool.

Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, Aruba

The name says it all. The H2Oasis provides a haven from the all-age activity of the resort’s primary pool yet lacks in nothing. A room key is required to enter the fenced environs of this 10,000-square-foot adult playground, where tall royal palms hover over a mosaic-tiled pool. Much like a communal fireplace at a ski lodge, the pool becomes a focal point for guests to mingle in chaise lounges, drift off under the shade of nearby cabanas, or linger in the notched aquatic alcoves that line the perimeter of the pool, with the bar steps away. The entire space is dedicated to adult tastes, with Wi-Fi coverage to stream your tablets and e-readers, and never a worry of youngsters running through and toppling your cocktail or splashing your screen.

Aruba Marriott

For the definitive escape, you can book a private cabana, where your reservation gives access to your own wood-framed bed surrounded by billowing white drapes and enjoy onsite treatments from the hotel’s Mandarin Spa staff. The inviting stools of the pool bar await under a palapa roof. Still, if even that short walk from your chosen chaise threatens to interrupt your languor, you can order lunch and drinks from the pool attendant to be delivered to your poolside hangout.

JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa, Cancun, Mexico

This five-star lux resort sits smack in the center of the Hotel Zone of Cancun, where white sand beaches and turquoise water are part of the equation. The JW sports three outdoor pools on the massive pool deck and garden arena with sets of lounge chairs, umbrellas, and hot tubs scattered about, all facing the ocean. Each offers a lagoon appearance meandering through the patios and walkways; there is an infinity edge to swim up to for that direct ocean view, a mixed population pool with a high dive area, and a simulated tropical reef where kids learn the basics of scuba diving. And adults looking for a bit of distinction can gravitate to their designated pool and enjoy a cocktail in swim attire at the swim-up bar.

JW Cancun

Adults find a tranquil oasis, swim-up bar, and beach views from the adult pool at the JW Marriott. Photo: JW Marriott Cancun

If even more quiet time is on the agenda, then book one of the private poolside cabanas with a brunch basket filled with fresh tarts and chilled Champagne. Take a few more steps toward the beach, reserve one of the palapa-topped cabanas with plush lounges set in the sand and have that picnic basket delivered. In the evenings, shake things up at the JW Lobby Bar, where a menu of 150 margaritas awaits. Choose from the selection of expertly crafted cocktails inspired by the resort’s extensive offering of 150 fine tequilas featuring native Mexican ingredients.

Four Seasons Resort Nevis, Nevis

There are three pools at the Four Seasons, each infinity-edged, nestled in tropical landscaping and stunning. But there, the similarities end, as each attracts a different group of guests. The Garden Pool sits right adjacent to the lobby and restaurant, which is the happening spot for lunch and cocktails. This pool provides the primary hub for family activities. The Ocean Pool is great for swimming laps, but it is the tranquility of the Reflection Pool that adults gravitate to when looking for some downtime.

Adult Pool Four Seasons

Here, sequestered from resort activity, is the spot where adults can unwind and chill without youngsters, noise, or interruptions. Lush landscaping provides a tranquil setting where one can read, converse quietly, or sip cocktails in a low-key, sophisticated atmosphere. There are adult-size water toys for those who wish to float away the day, but most find a chaise under one of the umbrellas on the teak deck that surrounds the pool and settle in for the duration, mesmerized by the reflection of Mount Nevis mirrored in the waters of the pool. In the foreground, the deep blues of the Caribbean Sea are fronted by café au lait sand of Pinney Beach. The Kastawey Beach Bar is just steps away, where sushi chefs prepare unique rolls and sashimi. You can dine under umbrella- topped teak tables or order from the pool area. Don’t forget the resort’s signature cocktail, the Nevisian Smile, served to you in your cushioned poolside chaise.

Ritz-Carlton, Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

New to the island of Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos, opening in 2021, is the Ritz-Carlton, the first actual high-rise for this stretch of beach, promising the best island views from oceanfront balconies. And the main focus here is to enjoy the sea views that begin right from the open-air lobby, which reaches out to the sand and shimmering blue sea the island is famous for. From the walkway, you’ll find direct access to the two pools.

Turks Ritz

Chaises, floating lounges, and private cabanas round out the offerings at Ritz-Carlton adults pool. Photo: Ritz-Carlton

Adults looking for some quiet time will head to the specified adult pool backed by tropical landscaping and close by to the outdoor restaurant for lunch or drinks. The pool is long, shallow, and placed within a few steps of the beach. The most unique feature is the floating day beds, set up on a tiled platform, not floating, but access is via the water. You can order from the pool attendants once you settle in and hunger strikes. The menu runs from Mediterranean with Caribbean tropical highlights like the island favorite, conch salad, served fresh and spicy. Seafood lovers will find the grilled fish sandwich, or the Mediterranean fish wrap a bonus. Chill out the afternoon with a bottle of Prosecco. And there’s always that ultimate splurge and a refuge from the sun at one of the cabanas sitting at the pool’s edge where the breezy drapes offer just enough privacy for an afternoon nap.

Florida Keys Resorts With A Private Island Feel

With more than five million people visiting these islands each year, you might think that personal space is at a premium. But if you know where to look, there are select resorts that exude tranquility and evoke a private island feel. Here are five favorites.

A Natural Choice For Families Baker’s Cay Resort, Key Largo

Tucked away on the 15-acre site of a former pineapple plantation overlooking the quiet waters of Florida Bay, Baker’s Cay is a destination the entire family can enjoy. Nature trails wind through mangrove hammocks where breaks in the greenery overlook the water. The grounds include two waterfall pools plus a private 15-acre white sand beach with plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas. Grab a bike, paddle a kayak, or bait up a fishing pole. For the more adventurous, scuba diving, fishing charters, and seaplane rides can be arranged. If relaxation is on the agenda, you can catch a sunset with live music at the beach bar, enjoy a romantic dinner on the beach or join the evening fire pit conversation.

The hotel’s fresh tropical look unveils sea-inspired guest rooms with bay vistas from most of the 200 guest rooms and suites. Views of the mangrove forest are seen from the remaining 30 rooms, suites come equipped with kitchenettes and the larger waterfront suites are complete with Roman bathtubs and wraparound terraces. The family-friendly atmosphere also includes quiet and secluded places for adults and even a private small beach with a serene setting. At night, parents can enjoy the hotel’s own Patron Barrel Select tequilas paired with tacos at the beachfront venue Dry Rocks. For the younger set, there’s plenty to keep busy at the kid’s camp, from scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, s’mores bonfire, and more. Family pets are also welcome, and the resort even provides beachside tiki huts for dogs. https://www.bakerscay.com/

A New Take on a Keys Classic Casa Morada, Islamorada

When a small 1950s-era waterfront motel fell far behind the times, some might have called the bulldozers and started on a high rise. Fortunately, Casa Morada escaped this fate and has instead been transformed into a 16-suite boutique resort with a garden setting. The centerpiece of the grounds is a private island reached by way of a footbridge. From the island pool deck, guests can enjoy sweeping views of the bay, sunset cocktails, and the gazebo. Beach cruisers, snorkel gear, paddle boards, and kayaks are on hand for the taking, and guests can arrange for sailing trips aboard an island-style sloop or take a sunset cruise on the resort’s meticulously restored classic motor launch.

The all-white exteriors of guest houses at this quiet adults-only property create a timeless look, while interiors promise casual elegance and offer indulgences such as private soak tubs, outdoor garden showers, and water-view terraces. Minimalist by design includes touches of nature and conjures up barefoot island style. Attracting adults averaging in age from 30 to 75 and beyond, the quiet and unique property offers a chance for romance where candlelit dinners on the island or in your garden or seaside terrace can be arranged. https://casamorada.com/

All-Inclusive Indulgence Bungalows Key Largo, Key Largo

No need to hop on a plane to the Caribbean to enjoy an all- inclusive beach resort. The recently-opened Bungalows on Key Largo is Florida’s primary all-inclusive adults-only beach resort, and it’s been named one of the best all-inclusive vacation experiences in North America. Food, activities, water sports, and premium libations are all part of the package but don’t think tequila shots and rowdy DJs. This is a destination for relaxation and recreation. The resort sits within a botanical garden along the ocean offering nature-inspired activities as well as pure relaxation and an easy disconnect from the hustle of the mainland.

A focal point of Bungalows is the oceanfront pool deck and docks where guests can enjoy the sunsets over the waters of Florida Bay. Photo: Bungalows Key Largo

Guests are housed in individual bungalows that provide private outdoor soak tubs, rain showers, and outdoor verandahs. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and candlelit spaces where relaxation is enhanced by the soothing sounds of nature. There are the expected amenities of an upscale all-inclusive —five on- site restaurants, two pools, hot tubs, a fitness center, water sports, daily activities, and entertainment — but that’s just part of the picture. Each bungalow comes with two cruiser bikes for exploring the property. There’s also a Zen garden, yoga sessions, al fresco spa treatments, and a unique floating tiki bar for sunset celebrations. https://www.bungalowskeylargo.com/

A Picture-Perfect Place The Moorings Village, Islamorada

When walking the palm-fringed beach of this landmark property, you might think you were on a movie set. And you’d be correct. The Moorings Village has seen its share of photo shoots and film production, including everything from a Sports Illustrated swimsuit feature to the setting for the Netflix series Bloodline. Most days, the vibe is decidedly lower key as there are just eight private cottages tucked into an oceanfront estate where orchid-filled gardens are shaded by hundreds of coconut palms that line the longest private beach in the Florida Keys. A short walk from your doorstep brings guests to a day at the beach, out to the pier, or cozied up in one of the hammocks strung throughout the property.

The Moorings Islamorada

In addition to The Moorings eight private cottages, guests can rent the 6,000-square-foot Blue Charlotte residence with its 18- meter pool, chef’s eat-in kitchen, and private office. Photo: Daniel Garrido/Flickr

Set on a former 18-acre coconut plantation, the property was a private estate back in the early 1900s and the grounds have remained pretty much the same. After a rebuild following hurricane Irma, today the enclave is much more than glorified hotel rooms; the cottages offer airy island-inspired decors that take in ocean views and come with all the comforts of home. The grounds include a 25-meter pool, grilling stations, and a fitness center. The staff can arrange a variety of activities from water sports and fishing trips to dinner reservations. A favorite with many guests is starting the day watching the sunrise over the Atlantic, then walking the short distance across the island later in the day to catch the sunset over dinner and drinks at the Morada Bay restaurant. https://themooringsvillage.com/

A Touch of Tahiti Little Palm Island Resort & Spa Little Torch Key

If you were dropped blindfolded onto the shores of this private island, you might think you’d arrived in the South Pacific. With powder-soft beaches, a sparkling lagoon, towering coconut palms, and iconic thatch-roofed bungalows set among tropical gardens, Little Palm Island is like nowhere else in North America. You arrive aboard a vintage motor launch and are ushered into a secluded oasis of relaxation and indulgence. The four-acre island is located three miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean and fronted by a unique white sand beach. You’ll enjoy surreal sea vistas during the day and dramatic nights dotted with stars.

Fresh from a recent island-wide makeover, this acclaimed resort now promises to exceed its standards for luxe vacations in the Florida Keys. The 30-thatched-roof bungalows are discreetly nestled throughout the property hidden by tropical foliage and backed by hundreds of Jamaican coconut palms. Private sundecks, outdoor showers, and ocean views are enjoyed with no distractions. The resort has no phones, televisions, or alarm clocks to interfere with total relaxation. Think gourmet dining, wine tastings, in-room massages, private soak tubs, and wellness programs in an Indonesian-inspired spa. Active types can always opt for fishing, sailing, and snorkeling trips, but the overall vibe is low-key luxury with an extra helping of relaxation. https://www.littlepalmisland.com/
